Tuesday, 11 April
We will begin the class with a comma review; this is our GMAS preparation.
Next, we will complete a recap of The Outsiders. There were quite a few students absent last week when we previewed the film, and since it must be included in the "Coming of Age" essay, I will be in my room Wednesday and Thursday from 2:45 - 3:30 to allow students to preview the film. Otherwise, students should plan to view the film on their own.
The class will go back over the short story "Marigolds" and prepare to rewrite portions of the story from Miss Lottie's point of view (this is good preparation for the GMAS narrative writing. The teacher has provided a model for expectations. A draft of the story must be written by Friday. We will be in the gold lab to type this document. It will be saved in the student's Office 365 space and shared with the teacher by the end of class on Monday, April 17th.
•. Write a "micro mini-short story" from Miss Lottie’s point of view.
1. Length: one page at least 25 sentences and 250 words in length. 2. You may use your texts and notes during rewrites. 3. Each story must answer the following questions:
•How does Miss Lottie feel about her living conditions?
•How does she manage to take care of her son John Burke?
•Why does she plant marigolds?
•Why doesn’t she get angry with Lizabeth after Lizabeth destroys her marigolds?
Wednesday-Thursday
The class will continue their GMAS comma review and students will work independently on their story writing. We will also review capitalization as well.
As students finish, they will work on the final two poems, "Hanging Fire" and "Teenagers" from the textbook. Students will rewrite "Hanging Fire" in letter format. The teacher will model the expectations for this assignment. In addition to the letter, students will complete questions and a handout on both poems.
Students will also create a graphic of the poem "Teenagers." The graphic will be a door On one side of the door, students will illustrate a teenager's point of view while the other side will present the parents' perspective.
Students will work with a partner on this task.
